Developing life

Small does not mean imaginary.

Biology can answer what is developing. It cannot settle every question about relationship, moral worth or what love requires.

A changing clinical stage

Nervous-system development and viability are individual clinical questions.

Language with care

Accurate terms do not need to become weapons.

Pregnancy dating starts from the first day of the last menstrual period, about two weeks before fertilisation in a typical cycle. “Embryo” is used early and “fetus” later; “baby” may express relationship. A clinician can explain development in your pregnancy.

Fetal pain and awareness

A question that deserves an honest answer.

Movement or reflexes do not by themselves show conscious pain. Major medical bodies place the capacity for conscious pain later in pregnancy, while the nervous system continues to mature.

What current reviews say

ACOG states the physiological capacity for pain is not present until at least 24–25 weeks. The RCOG’s 2022 review says pain perception before 28 weeks is unlikely; local brain networks emerge around 28 weeks and longer-range connectivity increases after 30 weeks.

What this evidence does not decide

Pain capacity is a scientific question. Whether developing human life has moral worth is also philosophical and theological. We keep those kinds of claims clearly separated.
